Plywood House

Situated on the southern slopes of the Friends of Skuilkrans Bird Sanctuary, Plywood House 1 embodies architectural innovation and environmental sensitivity. Acquired in 2012 and developed in 2022 by Earthworld, the project aimed for a low-maintenance, cost-effective three-bedroom house harmonising with the natural landscape and existing large trees.

The ground floor includes a garage, guest bedroom, and study, while the first floor, aligned with the slope, houses the main entertainment areas: lounge, kitchen, dining area, and an outdoor patio. This patio, set amidst the trees, offers an immersive natural experience, connecting seamlessly with the sanctuary.

Plywood House 1 features innovative material use and thoughtful spatial planning. The first floor’s plywood structural components, including columns, walls, and rafters, contrast with the robust industrial materials of steel and facebrick masonry on the ground floor. The exterior, wrapped in corrugated sheeting, presents a cohesive contemporary industrial aesthetic.

The interior's natural OSB finishes reinforce the industrial theme while ensuring cost-effectiveness. Stone landscape walls integrate the house with its surroundings, maintaining a seamless connection with the environment. Large windows and open areas provide natural light and stunning views of the trees, emphasizing a tranquil living space.

The design prioritises sustainability, respect for the natural environment, and a modern industrial aesthetic, setting a new standard for residential architecture in South Africa.
